While searching for tigers in Bardia National Park, we also had the opportunity to enjoy some excellent birding. As is often the case, wildlife trips are not only about the main target species — sometimes the smaller encounters become memorable as well.
During our time in the park, we came across both the Siberian Stonechat and the Pied Bushchat.
Familiar Birds, Yet Always a Pleasure to See
We have previously observed these species in Singapore and Hokkaido, but they are the kind of birds that never lose their charm. No matter how many times we encounter them, seeing them again always brings a smile.
Their compact size, upright posture, and lively behavior make them particularly enjoyable to watch.
Unexpectedly Close Views
One of the highlights was how close we were able to approach them.
Perhaps because we were observing from a safari vehicle, the birds seemed relatively unconcerned by our presence. Instead of flying away immediately, they remained perched nearby, allowing us to enjoy unusually close views and photographs.
For bird photographers, opportunities like this are always appreciated.
Birding in Nepal
Nepal may not have many highly sought-after endemic bird species compared with some other Asian birding destinations. However, it offers something equally enjoyable: the chance to observe a wide variety of birds at close range in beautiful natural settings.
For us, that was one of the pleasant surprises of birding in Bardia. Even while waiting for a tiger, there was always something interesting to see.
