One of the great advantages of birding in Uganda is that it is surprisingly easy to see a wild Shoebill.
At a wetland located only about 30 minutes by car from the airport, Shoebills appear to be present regularly. Visitors can join a simple hand-paddled boat tour lasting around 30 minutes, making this one of the most accessible places in Africa to observe this legendary species.
A Surprisingly Popular Birding Destination
During our Uganda trip, this was actually the only location where we saw a large number of tourists — easily more than thirty people. That alone made us realize just how famous and sought-after the Shoebill has become among wildlife travelers and birders.
Meeting the Shoebill Almost Immediately
After boarding the boat, it took only about five minutes before we encountered the Shoebill.
The bird stood completely motionless, living up to its famous reputation. Because it barely moved, we ended up taking only a single photograph — but honestly, simply seeing such an extraordinary bird in the wild was more than enough.

A Realistic Option Even for Short Trips
Compared with destinations such as the mountain gorilla trekking areas — which often require at least two or three days from the airport — the Shoebill is remarkably accessible.
In fact, if carefully planned, it would probably even be possible to make a quick day trip from Uganda and return to Ethiopia on the same day.
For bird lovers with limited time, this wetland is an exceptionally practical and rewarding destination.
