An Encounter with a Beautiful Endangered Vulture Feb 2026

Lake Mburo National Park is an exceptionally exciting destination, with high densities of both mammals and birds. Although our Uganda trip involved moving almost every day, this is one park where we would gladly stay two nights or more on a future visit.

During an early morning jeep safari, we encountered around five species of raptors, making the drive particularly rewarding.

White-headed Vulture – A Striking Presence

Among them, the most memorable was the White-headed Vulture. As its name suggests, its white head is distinctive, but even from a distance, the bird appeared elegant and surprisingly beautiful.

There was something almost artistic about the sight — a vulture perched in the soft morning light, perfectly framed against the African landscape. It was one of those moments when you simply stop and watch, fully absorbed.

A Rare Experience for Us

In Singapore, vultures occasionally appear as rare vagrants — perhaps once every few years. However, we had never seen a species as visually striking as this one. Encountering such a beautiful vulture in its natural habitat was a first for us.

Looking Ahead: Raptors as a Main Focus

This experience made us reconsider our priorities for a future Uganda trip. Perhaps next time, we might focus primarily on raptors.

The Crowned Eagle, in particular, is high on our wish list — and we hope to return one day to search for it.
