In Uganda, birding is not limited to forest kingfishers. It is also possible to observe water-associated kingfishers, often with much higher visibility and success rates.
Malachite Kingfisher at Mabamba Swamp
At Mabamba Swamp, we observed the Malachite Kingfisher, and it was seen easily and with a high level of reliability. For birders hoping to add a wetland kingfisher without much effort, this is an excellent location.
As its name suggests, the Malachite Kingfisher has a crown of shimmering blue and green, sparkling like a polished gemstone. Its colors are truly striking and beautiful.

Ideal Timing and Target Species
Mabamba Swamp is located relatively close to Entebbe International Airport, making it a very convenient stop either at the beginning or at the end of a Uganda trip.
In addition to the Malachite Kingfisher, the swamp is also famous as one of the best places to see the Shoebill. At Mabamba, these two species naturally become the main targets for most visitors.
Practical Notes: Heat and Preparation
One important point to note is the heat. The conditions can be extremely hot, so a hat and sunglasses are essential. Without proper sun protection, birding here can quickly become uncomfortable.
A Unique and Relaxing Experience
Birding at Mabamba is done from a small boat, slowly moving through dense aquatic vegetation. Gliding quietly through the swamp while parting water plants creates a strong sense of being removed from everyday life. It is both relaxing and surprisingly enjoyable.
That said, because of the intense heat, extended birding sessions are difficult. We spent less than 30 minutes on the boat, but even in that short time, the experience stood out as one of the highlights of the latter half of our trip.
