The following day, we started birding early in the morning at Kibale National Park. While the park is best known for chimpanzee tracking, it also offers excellent opportunities for forest birding.
Our main target for the day was the Green-breasted Pitta.
Strong Guiding Team for a Difficult Target
Thanks to careful arrangements, we were guided by a team of three people, including a female park ranger known for her sharp hearing and strong experience with pittas. Having multiple guides scanning and listening greatly increased our chances with such a secretive species.
Finding the Pitta
After searching for about 30 minutes, we finally located the pitta. Even better, it was in display, which allowed us to observe behavior we had never seen before.
As its name suggests, the bird has a green breast, and its compact shape and colors give it a very charming appearance. Seeing this pitta under natural forest light was a truly special moment.
Why an Early Start Matters
We were told that seeing this species becomes much more difficult later in the day. For that reason, we left our hotel at 5:30 a.m. and arrived at the park shortly before 6:30 a.m..

Terrain & Physical Demands
Although Kibale is famous for chimpanzees, birders should not overlook its forest species. That said, finding the Green-breasted Pitta requires effort.
The search involved about 30 minutes of walking with steep ascents and descents, so a reasonable level of fitness is important. Preparing your legs in advance will make the experience far more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts
Kibale National Park proved that it is not only a destination for primates but also a rewarding site for serious birders. Successfully seeing the Green-breasted Pitta — especially during display — made this early morning one of the highlights of our Uganda trip.
