On a recent visit to PICOP (Philippines) in April 2025, we had an unexpected encounter with the Blue-capped Kingfisher (Actenoides hombroni) — a stunning forest kingfisher endemic to Mindanao. This elusive bird was hard to find, but finally revealed itself with help from a local guide. Here’s our experience and what we learned.
When & Where
- Date: Mar, 2025
- Location: PICOP, Mindanao, Philippines
- Habitat: Dense forest with significant undergrowth and shaded trails — typical of forest kingfishers.
Target Species
- Blue-capped Kingfisher (Actenoides hombroni) — a forest kingfisher. It is known for its striking colors and perched behavior deep in shaded forests.
- Endemic to the Philippines and associated with tropical moist lowland and montane forests.
Observation Story
We weren’t expecting to photograph this forest kingfisher — it’s notoriously difficult to find. After struggling to locate it on our own, a local guide double booking us and big European group. Young American birder suddenly stopped and pointed it out. At that moment, we finally got our camera ready and were able to observe it.

In the dense forest of PICOP, finding this bird requires focus and silence; even when it’s present, the shadowed environment makes sightings challenging. We all took turns photographing through small gaps in the foliage.

Tips for Birders & Photographers
- This bird is no singing, just stay there with silence. No moving.
- Dense shade makes focusing challenging; manual focus or focus-peaking assistance can help when shooting in low light.
- Be patient — this bird may appear only briefly before retreating deeper into the forest.
Conclusion
Seeing the Blue-capped Kingfisher in PICOP was a highlight of our April 2025 trip. Its vivid plumage and shy behavior make it a truly special lifer bird for any birder visiting Mindanao. With the right timing and a bit of local guidance, this elusive forest kingfisher can be added to your birding list.
