Encounter with the Southern Silvery Kingfisher at Malagos Garden Resort, Davao – May 2022

On our trip to Davao in May 2022, we unexpectedly spotted the rare Southern Silvery Kingfisher at Malagos Garden Resort. This article shares where and how we encountered it — a must-read for birdwatchers visiting Mindanao.

When & Where

  • Date: May 2022
  • Location: Malagos Garden Resort, Davao City, Mindanao, Philippines

Target Species

  • Southern Silvery Kingfisher — a Philippine endemic species, known to inhabit Mindanao’s rivers and forest streams.

Observation Story
We initially planned to go to PICOP for birding, but after some online searching we discovered a report of this kingfisher at Malagos Garden Resort. On a whim, we visited — and it turned out to be the right choice. A local birder showed us the spot, and we were fortunate enough to see the pair nesting near a forested stream on the resort grounds.

Why This Spot Works

  • The resort offers organized morning bird-watching tours starting at 7 AM.
  • The habitat — a forested stream surrounded by lush vegetation — matches the species’ natural preferences.
  • No guide is strictly necessary; with a little luck and early start, even beginner birdwatchers can see the bird.

Travel & Stay Tips

  • The resort is easily accessible from Davao’s main airport (about 1-hour taxi ride).
  • For those interested in other wildlife or even a relaxing stay: the resort also features a small aviary (parrots, etc.), a stream suitable for nature walks, and boasts a chocolate-factory experience — making it appealing even for non-birding companions.

Conclusion

This is probably the easiest and most reliable place to see the Southern Silvery Kingfisher. However, it is located in the opposite direction from PICOP when coming from the airport. It’s best to plan your birding route in advance and decide on the order of the sites you want to visit. A guide is not necessary here.
If you’re headed to Mindanao and hoping to see the Southern Silvery Kingfisher, consider staying at Malagos Garden Resort. With a good start time and patience, it’s possible to enjoy a comfortable trip while witnessing one of the Philippines’ most charming endemic kingfishers.
